“This Local Board of Passive Defense […] agreed as a first measure, and given the urgent needs to protect the civilian population against possible bombing by the partisan aviation, the construction of trenches.”
Report of the Figueres City Council, 2 December 1937 (ACAE)
The first passive defence work carried out by the Local Passive Defence Board (JLDP) of Figueres was five trenches, completed in December 1937. To build those open shelters, with a zigzag layout, existing gardens and plots within the city were used.
One of these trenches, called the Horta Ferran (the Ferran Allotment], was located in this place, taking advantage of the land of some old orchards that extended approximately around the current number 57 of Sant Antoni Street.
The five trench-type shelters cost the JLDP 41,000 pesetas, but they employed a hundred workers for three months, and and from December 1937 they provided shelter to at least 1,292 people.
