In the Empordà, these sweets are called ‘brunyols’, not bunyols as in other parts of Catalonia.

They are a typical sweet that is still made by many Empordà families at Lent and Easter. They are characterised by a slight aniseed flavour and a sugar coating. You can also find them in the bakeries and patisseries of Figueres throughout the year. In the city we celebrate the Buñuelo Fair on the feast day of Saint Joseph (19 March).
