Designed by engineer Juan Martín Zermeño and built between 1753 and 1808, this fortress has witnessed key historical events, including the death of General Álvarez de Castro and the last meeting of the Republican government. Covering an area of 32 hectares, it is the largest 18th-century fortress in Europe.
